New EU legislation
New EU legislation
A new EU Directive for gluten-free foods has been introduced and will be effective from 1 January 2012. The new law means that there will be a limit of 20ppm gluten (20mg/kg) for all foods labelled as GLUTEN FREE. At present it is possible to have products labelled as “Naturally Gluten Free”. From 01 January 2012 such labelling will no longer be permitted.
Finax has been producing gluten free products containing wheat starch for some time and they already meet the new legislation’s requirements to be labelled as “Gluten Free” as they contain less than 20ppm (20mg /kg) gluten. The labelling on our packaging has been updated to reflect this.
Some Finax gluten-free products will be relabelled
With the introduction of the new legislation there will be changes to some, though not all, Finax gluten free products: Products based on Codex A wheat starch will continue to be labelled “GLUTEN FREE”.
Products based on naturally gluten free ingredients, such as corn, will no longer be labelled as Naturally Gluten Free. They will also be labelled as “GLUTEN FREE”.
The new legislation means that all gluten free products from Finax will be labelled as ”GLUTEN FREE”. The transition to the new labelling is on-going and is scheduled to be completed in January 2011. There may, of course, still be some packs on retailers’ shelves with the old label.
If you are unsure of the contents of any GLUTEN FREE product from Finax please read the ingredients on the package or contact us at Finax for more information.
